Land Reclamation: Caring for the land for our children

  In Alberta, the health of its ecosystems is an important issue in industrialization as oil sands development, mining, and agriculture with little biodiversity lead to the direct loss of grazed areas. At the same time, the disturbance of topsoil and vegetation threatens groundwater recharge, water quality, and similar ecosystems downstream. Alberta is one of Canada’s most natural resource-rich provinces, and for decades, industrial development has flourished here but has been at the expense of the environment. It becomes vitally necessary to engage in land reclamation of such areas to minimize the adverse effects of mining activities and to ensure the long-term health of the mined-out land. It's well known that when large areas of land are disturbed by industrial activities, it can contribute to soil degradation, vegetation loss, and pollution of local water bodies.
